HOLY BOLDNESS
The wicked flee when no one pursues,
But the righteous are bold as a lion.
Proverbs 28:1 (NKJV)
Esther's life has mostly been governed by men. From Mordecai to Hegai and eventually King Xerxes, she navigated a world where women were not celebrated for being outspoken or bold. This is evident in the fate of the king's first queen, Vashti. Her refusal to appear before the king at his drunken request led to her removal as queen, which initiated the search for a new, compliant queen.
Fast forward to Esther's situation: her strategy to seek the king's mercy for the Jewish people is proving effective so far, yet she remains aware that any displeasure from King Xerxes could lead to death. During the second day of the banquet she has arranged for the king and Haman, her inner confidence—rooted in her faith in God—empowers her to make her request. She reveals her identity as a Jew and the imminent danger facing her people due to Haman's orders. Scripture even specifies that she is reclining on a couch (Esther 7:8) while Haman begs for his life. The assurance she displays in her posture is unmatched.
Esther could have remained silent to protect herself, but she didn't. She took a bold step she had never taken before: she spoke out at the right time. She traded passive silence for courageous advocacy when justice and her people were at stake. Often, women confuse silence with submission, but biblical boldness is not about constantly speaking or seeking people's approval. It is about standing firm in truth because of confidence in God.
Esther also shows us that boldness does not always mean speaking. When Haman begged for his life, she allowed his actions to speak for themselves. Jesus likewise remained silent at certain moments when He was accused (Matthew 27:12–14). His silence was not submission or weakness, but intentional restraint. Sometimes strength means speaking when God calls us to speak; other times, it means remaining silent. Esther was willing to sacrifice herself for her people out of duty and love, just as Jesus did for us.
APPLICATION: Has fear ever held you back from helping others or standing up for what's right? When we place our confidence in God, we need not be afraid. Take a moment to pray and reflect on what you may need to let go of to embody the holy boldness God calls us to display in our lives.
PRAYER: Dear God, I pray for a holy boldness today. To speak up or remain silent, I pray that I allow the Holy Spirit to lead me according to Your will. Amen.
